Are Pit Bulls Really That Bad?

There are three breeds of dogs, the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, which are called Pit Bulls. The animals that are produced by interbreeding these three breeds are also called pit bulls. In some regions, the American Bulldog is also called Pit Bull, but they have important genetic differences. The Bulldog is much larger in weight and has a shorter muzzle. In the 1990s, breeders began crossing the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier to produce the American Bully. This dog is often confused with the Pit Bull Terrier, but it is a distinct breed.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a cross between an Old English Terrier and an English Bulldog. These dogs have the courage of a terrier and the power of a bulldog. First raised in England, they came to the New World with the first settlers. They were used as hunting dogs, herders, and family pets. These dogs have been extraordinary in their ability to serve as companion dogs, therapy dogs, police dogs, soldiers, search and rescue dogs, and actors. Unfortunately, some were bred for their fighting ability and are used as guard dogs and attack dogs for illegal activities. Through no fault of their own, they have become feared by the general population due to misinformation.

The American Staffordshire Terrier was created in the 19th century by crossbreeding bulldogs and terriers. Unfortunately, the main reason these dogs were imported into the United States around 1870 was for use in fighting. The American Kennel Club accepted these dogs in 1936 and named them Staffordshire Terriers. Breeders began to create heavier, more muscular dogs. In 1972 the Club renamed it the American Staffordshire Terrier so as not to confuse it with the lighter Staffordshire Bull Terrier from England.

Are Pit Dogs Dangerous That Should Be Banned? It depends on who you ask. It is unfortunate that most people are unaware of the qualities of these dogs and the media bias towards them has greatly increased misinformation about them. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) says they have been told by animal control units across the United States that the media will not publish stories about dog attacks unless they are committed (or allegedly committed). for this breed of dog.

In August 2007, the National Canine Research Council conducted a four-day study to see if there was any evidence of bias against pit bulls in the media. On the first day, a Labrador mix attacked an elderly man, seriously injuring him. He survived the attack and there was an article about it in the local newspaper. On the second day, a baby died after being attacked by a mongrel dog and that fact was reported twice in the local newspaper. The third day brought an attack on a 6 year old boy who was attacked by a mongrel dog. He had one of his ears ripped off and a serious bite to the head. The boy survived and there was an article in the local newspaper. On the fourth day, a young woman was attacked at her home by two pit bulls. She was hospitalized with serious lacerations. She recovered from her injuries. This attack was reported in more than 230 articles worldwide. He also appeared on major television networks.

Misreporting is also a factor in the public’s opinion of the breed. Many attacks are supposed to be made by Pit Bulls if the animal in question is not obviously something else. The National Canine Resource Council calls this circumstance “Everything is a pit bull, whether he is or not.”

You can make any dog vicious. It has been unlucky for Pit Bulls to have the body structure to make them prized as fighting dogs. But a pit bull is just like any other dog. If you love him, take care of him and treat him with respect, he will be a joy in your life.
