Cowboy Crafts for Kids – Fun Craft Ideas

Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner. Crafting can add a personal touch to parties and make decorations affordable. But it also goes beyond cheap decoration. It provides the perfect opportunity for a family activity. So, get the kids involved! Take an idea and put it to work! Don’t be afraid to use your imagination… and your children will follow suit. Here’s an idea to get you started: cowboy crafts for kids.

Cowboy costume for Halloween:

Vest: Take a paper bag and cut a hole (big enough for the child’s head) in the bottom. Cut a slit from top to bottom on one of the wide sides of the bag. Cut an arm hole in each of the narrow sides of the bag. Now, let your child decorate with glue/glitter, paint, stencils, stamps, etc…

Sheriff’s Badge: Trace, draw, or stamp a star on a piece of cardboard. Cut out the shape and cover with aluminum foil.

Cowboy Hat – You will need a plastic party hat and 4-5 pieces of black felt. Simply cover the hat with the felt and staple it in place. Some cutting may be needed to make the felt fit. Use a piece of string to cover the edge seam. Use a black marker to color the silver staples.

Extend the idea with your own kids’ cowboy crafts.

Cowboy Tablecloth:

Purchase a simple tablecloth for your Thanksgiving or Christmas table. Let your children decorate it. Instead of using paintbrushes, give them little bundles of hay straw. They can dip the straw into the paint to form unique cacti, cowboy hats, bows, spurs, etc… Attach a sponge or stamp to a potato masher and let them “mark” the table. This can be the children’s tablecloth for your own children’s table or your centerpiece.

Cowboy Cactus Centerpieces:

Take a small pot and fill it with rocks, sand, clay, or soil. Stick a dowel or stick into the stuffing. Mold green clay around the spike to form it into a cactus shape. Take other colors of clay and form chaps, vest, hat and face. Break the toothpicks in half (you will have to make this for the child) and use them as cactus spines.

You can incorporate them into the decoration of your Christmas table! Depending on the size of your table, you may want to let the kids make several. Again, amp up the centerpiece with your own kids’ cowboy craft idea.

Snow blow:

Instead of a cowboy, have a snow punch. Let the children build a snowman. Make a loop with a craft pipe cleaner. Add a cowboy hat, vest, etc. Replace the smoking pipe with a strand of straw.

Cowboy Cookies:

Give Santa cookies that are in the shape of a cowboy hat. Let the children use a cookie cutter to make them.

Cowboy Christmas Tree:

Let the children make homemade Christmas tree decorations. You can stamp a piece of cardboard with cowboy hats, cacti, horses, cows, wagons, etc. Then let them paint and cut out. The piping can also be shaped for a cowboy theme.

These kids’ cowboy crafts should get you off to a good start. Children can have a lot of fun with crafting. Even the most sloppy result will brighten a child’s day. Imagine the pride they’ll feel when your Thanksgiving guests show off their hand-painted tablecloth.
