This may sound like a paradox, but being surrounded by news of financial gloom on a daily basis makes me think that an annual trip to the Alps should be considered a necessity, not a luxury. “A change is as good as a rest”, as the old saying goes, and a good thing too, as a ski holiday in Verbier probably won’t give you much rest. Whether you’re staying in a cozy chalet, a luxury hotel, or a bargain-priced basement apartment, it’s hard to resist the long, groomed slopes followed by Verbier’s vibrant bars. If a good party, plus great skiing, is at the top of your vacation wish list, then Verbier for Mardi Gras is a must. As the last day of indulgence before the start of Lent, what better place to do it than Verbier. You’ll be taking down shooters instead of gobbling up pancakes, but the principles are the same. It’s about letting go and getting trapped, followed by vowing never to drink again.

‘The Pub’ is the place to go if you really want to enjoy Mardi Gras, but make sure you are dressed up. One word of caution: his old school tie and pig tails aren’t going to cut the mustard. Costumes at Verbier are serious business at best; but with mardi gras, the stops are fine and are truly eliminated. As is often the case with costume parties, costumes made with love begin to disintegrate under the wear and tear of precarious dance moves, creating a slightly haunting scene of hapless hapless.
