Things to Do in St John, US Virgin Islands: Tips for an Extreme Little Lameshur Bay Experience

Little Lameshur Bay is a relaxing paradise within the paradise that is St. John. For a great day of hiking, exploring, and snorkeling, Little Lameshur is your ideal bay. Here are several tips to help you experience Little Lameshur Bay to the fullest.

Take an AWD or 4WD

The road leading to Little Lameshur Bay is an adventure in itself. It’s steep and bumpy and after a good rain it can be dirty and wild – a kind of practice race for off-road enthusiasts, but a fun and challenging ride for anyone used to the manicured jungle streets of asphalt. It is imperative that you bring an all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive vehicle for this trip.

Go early for the best snorkeling.

Little Lameshur Bay’s combination of underwater rocky outcrops, patches of seagrass, and calm, clear waters makes it one of the best snorkeling spots in all of St. John. While snorkeling is great throughout the day, it’s best to go early while the water is warm, the sun is mild, and crowds are non-existent.

You will see beautiful corals and rock groups with abundant seagrass beds in the middle of the bay. This is where turtles and rays hang out. At the eastern end, you’ll see Queens Angels, Atlantic blue tang, parrotfish, Caribbean spiny lobster, and a variety of hard and soft corals.

Bring hiking gear

The bay has access to many hiking trails that are truly impressive. There is Lameshur Bay Trail that runs east to meet the Reef Bay Trail. If you follow this route, you can visit the Great Reef Bay House ruins and petroglyphs and admire ancient Indian art. For a short hike, there is a trail to the ruins at the end of the peninsula that separates Little and Great Lameshur Bay. These trails are well marked and traveled, but you won’t find crowds.

Bring food and water

If you plan to spend the day in Little Lameshur, it is best to bring food and water because there are no facilities here other than picnic tables and a bathroom. After a long day full of activities, grab some delicious treats from Miss Lucy’s on your way back to town.

Little Lameshur Bay is a beach where you can really get away from it all. By taking an AWD or 4WD, going early for snorkeling, bringing hiking gear, and food and water, you can make the most of your visit to Little Lameshur Bay.
