Bruce Lee Training – Wing Chun Kung Fu Secrets

The original martial art that Lee used to create Bruce Lee’s training was Wing Chun kung fu. Oddly enough, Wing Chun was founded by a woman: her name was Yim Wing Chun.

As the story goes, over 400 years ago he learned this basic form of self-defense from a Buddhist nun.

The difference between Wing Chun and many of the other forms of Kung Fu is the difference between what some call the hard style and the soft style.

Yim Wing Chun felt that the other styles of Kung Fu put too much emphasis on the hard horse. He felt that this was not a wise course of action that a woman should train in. He developed the practice of Chi Sao, this is a unique part of the Wing Chun style, one where you flow with the opponent instead of trying to dominate them.

Unlike most other kung fu styles where you try to overpower your opponent through strength and technique, Wing Chun is more suitable for a female or smaller person as it is based on in a more aggressive style with short and compact defense and attacks.

Yip Man, Bruce Lee’s original Wing Chun instructor, was responsible for bringing the style from China to Hong Kong, where Bruce lived.

Yip Man was considered to be the foremost authority on Wing Chun at the time.

So it appears that the student, Bruce Lee, followed in the footsteps of the master and brought Wing Chun to the United States.

During Bruce Lee’s training and the training that took place in San Francisco, Lee noticed some aspects of Wing Chun and kung fu in general that were not practical in a real life fighting situation.

There have been many misconceptions and rumors as to why Bruce Lee decided to learn kung fu. The fact is that Bruce was no different than any child.

At the age of 13, after being severely beaten by a street gang, Lee began training in Wing Chun Kung Fu from Master Yip Man.

Early on, Bruce Lee felt that in Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun was the best form to use at close range. He later changed that because he felt Western boxing was much more effective at handling hand punches than any Chinese kung fu style. This is why there is so much emphasis on boxing in Bruce Lee’s training.
