Bulldog Training – English Bulldog Training Tips

English bulldogs can be quite stubborn and training one can sometimes require more patience than training other dog breeds. Here are some tips you can follow when training your bulldog friend.

First and foremost, when it comes to training a bulldog, you should always make sure you don’t give in to their stubbornness. In other words, if your bulldog insists on disobeying your commands, don’t give up; he may take a little time and persistence with these adorable bundles of love. But don’t be disappointed, it’s absolutely worth the work. The satisfaction you get when he is finally obedient is worth all the effort!

Training a bulldog requires patience, but not only that, you need to make sure that you are persistent in whatever it is that you are trying to teach your bulldog. If you start mixing various training methods it will create confusion and your bulldog will not understand exactly what you want. Bulldogs are pretty smart, but they’re also stubborn, so just because something didn’t work the first time doesn’t mean it can’t work.

Positive reinforcement is ultimately your tool for success. Don’t use harsh training methods that certain dog trainers use in an attempt to scare your bulldog into obeying you; that relationship never works. The positive reinforcement method works because you make your bulldog WANT to obey you, and in return, he will love you too.

So here is an excellent example of a positive reinforcement method that you can use to train your bulldog. Let’s say you want to train your bulldog to sit. Grab a bag of treats and make sure your bulldog has your full attention. Do not try to train your bulldog when he is not hungry or very distracted! When your bulldog has your attention, say the command “sit” and motion for him to sit. When your bulldog sits, give him treats and praise. Put him in a standing position and repeat the process.

This may sound simple, I know, but don’t underestimate the task. This may be one of the easiest tricks, but the same method basically applies to anything you want to train your bulldog. Keep in mind that it’s not your bulldog’s fault that he’s disobedient, you just haven’t taught your bulldog what to do yet.
