House Training Dogs – Yes You Can!

To be honest, training dogs at home is not an easy task, but it has to be done. Otherwise, you will have a dog that has accidents in the house constantly and you will be always busy cleaning your carpets. You might even start to notice a scent in his house. Pretty soon you’ll wish you never had a dog and start thinking about giving it away. The children will cry because they have become so attached to it and you will feel horrible.

As you can see, it’s best to house train your dog from the start, so tips for potty training puppies are in order here. Having had several puppies in my life, I have learned a thing or two.

1. Potty training a puppy takes an infinite amount of patience. You know that expression, “Rome wasn’t built in a day”? Well, it applies to the situation at hand. Puppies need a lot of patience because they are puppies. They will forget. They may remember twice in a row what they are supposed to do and then forget it, just like children do.

Above all, remember that you are the adult and you cannot give up and throw in the towel. Even when your dog has pooped in the house, crawled into it, and dragged it from its original resting place, you should remain calm and patient.

2. When training a puppy, be consistent. If he takes him outside after every meal so he can take care of his business, he will start to learn that behavior. If you stop hanging out with him after every meal, he will make a mess in the house. You have to take your dog out constantly and often.

3. People like feedback and so do dogs. Praise your pup after he has successfully exited. Do this each time so that he makes the connection between his actions and your pleasure. Similarly, communicate your displeasure to him after he’s had an accident inside, but do so when you catch him in the act. Don’t hit him or he will start connecting the dots that any poop or pee is bad.
