Knowing the "Why" from your podcast

If you ask the average podcast “WHY” they are doing it, many of them will give you a blanket statement of “I am sharing my messages with the world.” But that doesn’t really answer the “WHY” of your podcasting journey.

If a person wants to “share his message” with the world, why not blog? Why not the radio? Why not television? Why did you choose podcasting as the place of choice?

Now let me ask you the same question. Why are you podcasting?

Can you answer that question? Why is answering this question so important?

In the short space I have here, let me try to explain to you the importance of understanding your “why” about podcasting.

Podcasting is a form of your own personal radio show. It is audio only (there are video podcasts, but the technical definition of a podcast is audio only. Most podcasts are audio in nature).

Since there is no video involved, a successful podcaster must be a great vocal communicator. We have all heard speakers who bored us and put us to sleep. A successful podcaster will be able to tell a story in words. A podcast must be able to draw the listener to the story and make the listener a part of the story!

A podcaster who understands the “why” will generally include the words “tell a story” somewhere in his explanation. For example, my own podcast tries to help Christian authors and business influencers tell the story of how they are impacting the world with what they do on a daily basis.

Look, I’m helping you “tell the story” to the world. It is not “I” who tells the story. I allow you to tell your story. I am the facilitator.

There are podcasters who are great storytellers. Many do not have guests on their show because they can tell their story themselves. Others are looking for someone (maybe you) to help them share their story!

Decide “why” you want to have a podcast and that discovery will help you plan the path you want to take. Do you want to tell your own story or do you want to help others tell their story?

It is not the same thing. But it will help you focus more and be more successful at podcasting!
