Take the time and take the time to verify the actual details about the birth of Jesus Christ

When there is so much bewilderment and confusion, and even serious and dangerous questioning, about the birth of Jesus Christ, about what really happened, it is good to take the time to check the details and examine the facts.

The birth of Jesus is rooted in history and grounded in Scripture and is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy in many different ways and aspects. Take time to read the accounts in the books of Matthew and Luke in the New Testament. I write ‘New Testament’, because there are many people these days who do not know where the books of Matthew and Luke are.

Luke, a doctor, gives us facts about the birth and what happened immediately before and after the birth.

Mary and Joseph had traveled some eighty miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem. It had been prophesied that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem of Judea. Note that it doesn’t say West Bank!

Everyone must admit that it is very difficult to fix your own birthplace, but Almighty God assured that His Son would be born according to the authentic word of the prophet Micah.

José looked for a place to stay but Bethlehem was overcrowded due to the census that was taking place. It is significant to understand that José looked for a room in the equivalent of a one-star hotel.

Economically, María and José were not wealthy. In other ways, they were very wealthy, but somehow few people would consider that real wealth. It is. It is real wealth that will never be taken away. This is why investing in the poor and investing in ministries that serve the poor can be so important.

There were no questions in five-star hotels for dear Joseph.

They gave him the equivalent of a pub car park! It was a place where animals were housed.

Jesus Christ was born in such an environment and there was no midwife present to take the baby and wash the newborn baby and return it to the mother. Maria and Jose had to do everything by themselves. The baby was wrapped in medical bandages and not the nice idea of swaddling many have been raised with.

Doctor Luke tells the story accurately and all this information must have been heard from Mary some years later.

We announce the birth of newborn babies, placing notices in newspapers.

Almighty God announced the birth of His Son through a heaven full of angels and announced it to the shepherds.

Shepherds were considered unreliable at the time. They were not allowed to testify or be witnesses in a court of law. His word could not be trusted. Here is God announcing from the highest to the lowest that his Son had been born.

The angels’ message was that a Savior had been born. A Savior saves people from his sins. Many want to be saved and rescued from their problems, pains, illnesses and circumstances. Jesus Christ came primarily to rescue men from their sins!

The word Bethlehem means house of bread. This is where the bread of life was born. But there is more. In Bethlehem lambs were raised for sacrifice and slaughter in the Temple of Jerusalem. Jerusalem is only six miles north of Bethlehem.

Here is the birth of the Lamb of God in Bethlehem and some thirty-three years later Jesus would be sacrificed and beheaded on Calvary’s Cross in Jerusalem. How can anyone consider all this a coincidence?

The shepherds went and saw Jesus just as the angels had told them. They saw Jesus Christ when he was only a few hours old.

The shepherds toured Bethlehem talking about everything that had happened but for many it was only of interest. They weren’t that upset.

The shepherds, we read, returned praising God, and Mary pondered all these things in her heart. She remembered the details of these last nine months and so she was able to tell Luke everything a few years later.

Where is baby Jesus now? He grew up to become a man. He was crucified and rose from the dead. He ascended, returning to his Heavenly Father when he had fully accomplished the work to which he had been sent.

Recording what happened is so simple. There is no exaggeration. It’s written by a doctor who was used to keeping records and being precise and exact, and Almighty God arranged it all.

Jesus alive, risen, is seated at the right hand of God the Father and continues to choose and call men today to serve him.

What is your reaction? What is your answer? That is what is so vitally important.
