Still serving up mysteries to physicists today, quantum physics is a study that has opened portals to previously unimaginable worlds. The name “quantum” comes from the Latin, meaning “how big” or “how much.” Building on previous discoveries, Max Plank was the first physicist to discover quantum mechanics. after one of his professors had already told him, at the end of the 19th century, that all physics had been discovered. What does Plank’s discovery mean to us? We’ll get to that.

What is quantum physics?

Quantum behaviors difficult to accept

With Plank’s discovery, all previously classical structures of matter and energy had to be discarded and new ideas considered. Physicists learned that you could measure a particle’s velocity and determine a particle’s location, but you couldn’t check both at the same time.. This discovery must have given you heartburn! Probabilities are a QM problem

More than fascinating is the physicist Erwin “Schrödinger’s cat” thought experiment to show how elusive quantum theory is. A cat and a sealed container of poison gas are placed in a sealed box with a Geiger counter. The box is protected against external radiation. The radiation in the box cannot be removed. If the Geiger counter detects a radioactive change, it is due to the wave behavior of the particles, and the beaker would break to kill the cat. Quantum mechanics, by virtue of the wave-particle duality, says that ultimately the cat is both alive and dead. Sounds silly, doesn’t it? The first person to summarize the experiment was Max Born, who theorized that these waves of elementary particles were actually “probabilities.”

The scientists wanted to confirm that light is generated in the form of waves using an interference pattern experiment. The experiment proved that light was indeed propagated by waves. Still, not entirely sure of their conclusion, they wanted to physically verify it. Imagine their surprise when they set up a camera to observe the experiment and found that instead of waves, the light had been transformed into individual particles. They came to an astonishing conclusion: the scientists themselves had simply collapsed the wave function. by observing the experiment.
