Make your own Star Wars lightsaber – start feeling the force today!

When George Lucus first came up with the concept of Star Wars, I doubt he would have imagined in his wildest dreams how successful it would be. The original Star Wars IV film A New Hope was brought to the big screen in 1977, audiences around the world were captivated by the incredible special effects and fantasized about a galaxy far away.

Despite being nearly 30 years old, Star Wars is as popular now than ever, thanks in large part to the success of the original films and the recent release of the prequels, it seems like people young and old are enjoying Star Wars Sager again.

Having been swept up in the 70s, I got caught up in the original hype of the force, Jedi, and of course lightsabers. Used by Jedi and Sith alike, this elegant weapon has been a must on every true Star Wars fan’s wish list since the original movie.

Imagine how cool it would be to have your own lightsaber. Voooooo-Vooooooo. Come on, admit it, did we all get it right? You stand by the mirror with a brush in hand and pretend to swing your weapon from side to side in true Obi-Wan style, pretending to be the Jedi master you know is deep within you. No, well maybe it’s just me then? Well, I was only 10 at the time, but the idea of having a lightsaber never left me.

Reality check, unfortunately and as much as it pains me to admit it, the viewers are not real. So the idea of maiming your worst enemy with a lightsaber will have to wait at least for now.

Still, it made me think of Lightsabers and even though I couldn’t make a real one. Maybe you could make a realistic accessory, like the ones used in the movies? What did surprise me is that despite the appeal of lightsabers, there is a distinct lack of information regarding how to make your own. Most guides are patchy at best and do not provide the detailed information needed.

The original lightsabers are believed to have been built from a ‘Glaflex 3 cell flash gun’, but unfortunately these are increasingly rare to locate and expensive to purchase. You can try eBay or other auction websites if you want to go this route, but watch out for fakes and incomplete parts.

Also don’t think that creating your own lightsaber is difficult, it is not. In fact, all the parts needed to make your weapon are available at your local hardware store. So what are you waiting for? Start feeling the force today and build your own lightsaber.

Vooooooo-Voooooo
