Where can you go in Varna, Bulgaria if the weather is not good enough for beach activities?

Varna in Bulgaria is one of the top destinations for many tourists from Europe. During the summer months, the air temperature can range between 20 and 40 degrees Celsius and the sea water between 18 and 26 degrees Celsius.

Normally, tourists come to Varna to go to the beach and spend some time swimming, tanning and enjoying the sun. Some days, however, nature does not agree with our desire to relax on the beach and sends some rain clouds to ruin our day.

But wait! Rainy weather does not always mean that your time in Varna will be wasted! This city has a lot to offer indoors to people interested in history, archeology and science. Here are some places you can go and have a nice time, even if it’s raining outside:

There are more than a dozen museums in Varna, the most visited being the Military Museum and the Archeology Museum; For nature lovers there is a ‘Dolphinarium’, where several shows a day with dolphins and sea lions are performed; and the Planetarium, located in the very center of the city, a great place to spend part of your time watching programs that present the solar system and the planets, as well as space itself. For people who prefer to spend their time shopping, Varna has several very large shopping centers, where you can find products of many different brands and producers, all under one roof.

The Varna Archeology Museum is one of the largest museums in Bulgaria. The exhibits in this museum show items from prehistory, from ancient Rome and Greece, Byzantium and medieval Bulgaria, as well as many objects from ancient Thrace.

One of the most famous exhibits in this museum is the oldest gold treasure in the world, dating back to 4200 BC. During the summer months, this treasure is always on display at the Varna Archeology Museum, but in the off-season it travels around the world as part of large exhibitions dedicated to human history.

The Military Museum is located in the central part of town, just to the left of the main entrance to Parque del Mar. Exhibits here feature ships, weapons, tanks, and other heavy machinery. Some of the items date from the 18th century, while most of the heavy machinery is from World War I and after.

A couple of the most popular items at the Military Museum are the two frigates, located just outside the museum. They are really hard to miss when you are walking around the Marine Park, and they are a perfect place to take some photos with your family.

If you go with small children, the best place to visit is the ‘Dolphinarium’, where every day there are several indoor water shows. If you arrive before the show start time, you can check out the cafeteria at the back of the building. Huge glass windows of 20 x 5 meters in size will allow you to enjoy the sight of the dolphins swimming by while you sip your refreshing drink or eat your ice cream.

If you are traveling with your family and would like to learn more about the solar system and planets, find some free time to visit the Planetarium. It is located just 100 meters from the Military Museum and 50 meters from the main street of Varna, which leads to the Marine Park. There are shows every two hours during opening hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The main room of this interesting facility, used for both education and entertainment, features a ceiling that rotates 360 degrees, where various projections are displayed while you sit in your chair.

These are just some of the top attractions in Varna that you can visit in any weather condition. Rain, wind or shine – Varna is always a fun place to be and a perfect holiday destination!
